BJL Ezine Silver Jewelry Cleaning Tips
Sterling silver reacts with moisture to create a layer of tarnish or oxidation on its surface. Many jewelry pieces that we introduce have intricate details that either already have patina or are meant to oxidize over time to bring about outstanding black and white contrasts. Please do not use jewelry cleaners (dips) because they are too harsh and will strip away the the surface of a jewelry piece as well as the patina. Jewelry cleaners can also cause cancer, so stay away from them.
From ten years experience, Mr Skull N Roses recommends simple, yet effective, cleaning techniques for silver, gold and platinum jewelry. Use only dish-washing liquid (strips away oils better than liquid hand soap) under hot running water and give your jewelry piece a good rub and wash.
For super clean results, dab a little toothpaste and rub it in gently with your fingers together with liquid soap and hot water. Be sure to always rinse the piece before you rub in toothpaste, in order to remove unwanted abrasive particles such as dirt. Liquid soap and a tooth brush can be used for certain pieces (i.e. chain necklaces) and for hard to reach spots. But do not use a toothbrush in combination with toothpaste on highly polished silver surfaces. Silver is a soft metal and you will notice swirls and scratches from abrasive rubbing. These cleaning tips will also work well on metal watchbands.

Enjoy your jewelry pieces and wear them often; they will look more vintage and classic over time. You can dress up or down very easily with the right combination of accessories. Jewelry is meant to be worn, so do not be afraid to get your jewelry scratched up, etc.
